When it comes to decontamination, not all technologies are created equal. You want to have the best method to eliminate bacteria to prevent serious consequences. Because the difference in technologies is so great, it is imperative to do your homework to choose the right product.

Today we reviewed two of the disinfecting methods on the market – the Ultraviolet Light Units (UV) verses Tomi Environmental Solutions’ Activated Ionized Hydrogen Peroxide process (AIHP) found in Steramist BIT, and there is a clear winner.

The AIHP process used in Steramist BIT from TOMI Environmental Solutions (which is EPA registered) kills bacteria on contact wherever they are to include areas where light cannot pass through.  This is where UV light fails without additional manpower, time and additional units to move furniture around in order to disinfect the entire space. UV light can even be defeated by dust and debris which can prevent an area from sterilization because of the light being blocked. Additionally, UV Light has been known to create safety concerns for both people who have received burns and property such as rubber and plastic that have been damaged by exposure.

The Process

The AIHP process utilized in Tomi’s Steramist Binary Ionization Technology (BIT) is a patented two-step process that activates and ionizes a 7.8% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution into a Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).  The fine mist /fog is called the AIHP.

Multiple Industries from Healthcare to Hospitality use this technology to ensure a safe environment for their clientele. It is effective in killing pathogen bacteria such as : Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC #6538), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC #15442),  and Clostridium difficile spores (C. diff) (ATCC # 43598.

In just 75 minutes a whole room (3,663.7 ft/104m3) can be treated effectively with just one unit including application time, contact time and aeration time. Less time is typically needed for smaller size room. In comparison, the UV light can be done in less time but requires more then one unit, special reflective paint and moving equipment around just to make sure it overcomes the areas where shadows block the sterilization.

Due to the portability and efficiency, of Tomi’s Steramist BIT units, comprehensive cleaning comes with a lower cost. Due to UV light systems limitations in reaching shadow areas, multiple units may be required for effective cleaning, and as a result more costs. Tomi’s Steramist on the other hand, can reach those shadow areas due to its efficacy and portability with a single handheld unit or by a complete room fogging system, thereby saving you money. Finally, Tomi is also more fiscally sound in the long run as UV systems require light bulbs that burn out and need to be replaced, requiring continuing additional costs.

In a clean sweep of all categories, Tomi’s AIHP process provides unparalleled cleaning technology, ease of use, and cost effectiveness over traditional UV technology. If you value the safety of your patients, guests, property and personnel, then Tomi’s AIHP is the clear choice.
